I've never thought of memes in this particular way, but humor coming from loss, solitude, or sadness is quite familiar, as in Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, etc. I like to think of my hearts, happy faces et al being universally understood. ๐๐ปโค๏ธ

Humor is such a useful tool. And emojis are another widely used and easily understood way of communicating that definitely bear deeper examination.
